Nostrand Avenue Restaurant Row - Updates

Businesses for Books Continues

The Businesses for Books program, conducted by the Friends of Brower Park Library, has had another successful month.  The program chose to support Leaf Crunch scheduled for November 24th, starting at 1pm in Brower Park.  This fun gathering, sponsored by Friends of Brower Park, conducts a clean up of leaves in the park with lots of help from children, who take rides in wheel barrows, pile leaves on large tarpaulins, and jump into those piles.  This all takes place before the leaves are deposited in a fenced-in area where they can gradually be turned into compost, rich earth that can be used next year to do more planting.  We are delighted to be supporting this effort by a sister organization, just as we are delighted to have ten more supporting businesses for the Brower Park Library.

The attractive posters that we put up have been designed by Maddie Partner.  She created the basic design.  And then as more businesses sign up, she puts in the logo of the business as well as its name and then sends this out to be hung up.  First these works are laminated so that updates can be added to them without tearing the paper.

As we wrote last month, we are most thankful to the businesses, both those already signed up and those who have just joined.  They have shown they are concerned about the community.  We encourage our readers to look over the list of businesses carefully, and if they have products that meet your needs, reward them by giving them your patronage.  We have many lovely restaurants and delis, a place for physical rehabilitation, hair salons (for braiding and other styles), an event space that puts on all kinds of shows, realty businesses for both residential and commercial properties, flowers, wines and liquors, hardware, acupuncture and herbal remedies.

Next month we are considering supporting a toy drive conducted by Krystal Deville of Sheffey Realty.  We are attaching her press release at the end of this article outlining how this program works.  One can contribute new unused toys at twenty-five different businesses in Crown Heights that have agreed to assist the program.  These toys are then made available to children who live in shelters. We thought this to be a worthy program, demonstrating that the community cares about its own and tries to take care of them.
